Hands-on: Android 5.0 Lollipop new apps and features [VIDEO]

Android 5.0 Lollipop DSC07203

Earlier this afternoon, Google released the final Android L Developer and although it’s not the “final” stable version we’ll see rolling out to Nexus devices in the coming weeks, it does give us a pretty damn good idea of what to expect. Of course, we couldn’t resist the lure of Lollipop and the Material Design therein, so once again, we flashed the system image onto our trusty old Nexus 5.

We were surprised to find a while lot has changed from the previous L Preview, with loads more polish and features than last time around. To understand exactly what we’re talking about you’re going to have to see for yourself. Check out our fairly lengthy hands on video above or full written portion down below.

New Setup Wizard app

Android 5.0 Lollipop Setup app 1

Android’s Setup Wizard app is usually one of the more tedious parts about the OS. You’ll simply sign into your Google account, opt in or out for a few things and you’re on your way to pure mobile bliss. If you happened to be using the same device (whether or a replacement or coming off a fresh factory reset), sometimes all your previously downloaded apps will begin downloading from Google Play Store — other times they wont. It’s always been a hit or miss and there was no real way to actually manage what was being restored. You just signed in and hoped for the best. Well, Android 5.0 Lollipop looks to change all that with the new and improved Setup Wizard.

Android 5.0 Lollipop Setup 2

Setting up a new phone is a lot easier thanks to the new Tap & Go feature which will import your account information from one device to another over Bluetooth connection. Simple tap the two NFC enabled Android devices together and you’re on your way (see video). Of course, the old method of simply typing in your Google user name and password manually still exists, but it’s not nearly as fun.

Also new is a real-life restore utility that allows you to choose a device you’d like to restore from (any device still linked to your Play Store account) and the ability to select all or individual apps from that device as well. It’s been a long time coming and whether you upgrade once in a blue moon or you’re constantly flashing new ROMs, just about everyone can appreciate Lollipop’s latest feature. Thank you, Google. Thank you.

76% more polish, animations, and Material

Android 5.0 Lollipop lockscreen homescreen

Whereas the last Android L Developer Preview was a barebones Android L experience, this newest Android 5.0 Lollipop Developer Preview is now much more polished, bringing 76% more Material animations (we calculated it). The lock screen now has some sleek new animations when accessing the phone and camera shortcuts, the notification area finally has a “dismiss all” button, the launcher folders and app drawer have Google Search like circular animations when opening, and even the recent apps area has gotten some sprucing up with a now persistent Google Search widget. Oh, and recent apps are no longer wiped after a reboot, which is pretty darn nice.

New Settings: Battery saver, Screen pinning, Trusted devices, Priority notifications

Android 5.0 Lollipop Settings app

In the new Lollipop Preview, the Settings app is also getting a little bit of love, sectioned off with a more card-like UI for 4 categories: wireless & networks, device, personal, and system. There’s also a host of incredibly useful new settings. Let’s take a look.

Android 5.0 Lollipop Interruptions settings

In a setting called “Interruptions,” Google has added the ability to assign which type of notifications you would like to interrupt you — all, priority, or none — and for how long (also accessible in the volume slider). You can even set specific days and times when you’d like to turn off notifications (during the work day, or evening hours), allowing only priority interruptions and/or calls from starred contacts, or anyone in your contacts.

While alarms and event reminders are by default “priority” notifications, keep in mind Android 5.0 allows other 3rd party apps to set their own priority level and you can even do this yourself in the new “App notifications” setting.

Android 5.0 Lollipop Smart lock

Lollipop gets even better with “trusted devices,” a feature we’ve seen OEMs implement in their own versions of Android (like Motorola). Essentially this allows users to bypass lock screen security when connected to specific “trusted” Bluetooth devices like a smartwatch, Bluetooth speakers, or car stereo. When no longer connected to these trusted devices, your phone will activate it’s lock screen security again.

Google actually ups the ante in Lollipop by not only allowing trusted Bluetooth devices, but trusted faces (face unlock) and trusted NFC tags as well. This could prove useful if you stick an NFC tag in a vehicle dock for easy access The provides an NFC tag example Google provides for trusted NFC tags is perhaps one you stuck onto a vehicle dock or whatnot. Whether you use it or not, there’s nothing wrong with extra options and the fact that this will come standard in all devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop — love it.

Android 5.0 Lollipop Battery saver

We already saw the battery saving feature in the previous L Preview, but for this new build, the notification and navigation bars now turn orange when activated. This lets the user know that 1. it’s not meant to be used all the time, 2. performance may suffer as a result of slower CPU, and 3. you should probably charge the phone soon.

When enabled, it can be turned off easily via the notification tray so you wont have to go fumbling around in the settings app again.

Hidden Easter Egg

Android 5.0 Lollipop hidden game Easter Egg

Every major Android release, Google “hides” an fun little Easter Egg inside the Settings app (About phone > Android version). For Android 5.0 Lollipop, Google went all out, including a full on Flappy Bird clone inside the OS. Pressing the version number 5 times activates phase 1 of the Easter Egg, while tapping on the lollipop image then long pressing it fires up the game. We have to say, it’s pretty much spot on with equal pull-your-hair-out difficulty as the original. It’s not something Google had to do, but we more than appreciate the gesture.

Android 5.0 Lollipop DSC07199

This was just a quick list of some of the new stuff we’ve noticed since diving into the new Android 5.0 Developer Preview and is by no means exhaustive. We’ll continue digging up new stuff in the coming days but in the meantime, if you’ve noticed anything new or have a favorite new feature of your own, feel free to shout it out down below. Cheers.

The Chordettes may have made the Lollipop song famous, but they didn’t create it. That credit goes to Ronald & Ruby who debuted the song in 1958.

This all begs the question… which Lollipop song is best?

Nexus Player sold out… but not on eBay (update: it hasn’t cleared FCC)

Nexus Player sold out… but not on eBay (update: it hasn’t cleared FCC)

It’s not surprising that the $99 Nexus Player – the first official Android TV device – sold out in its first day. The price point makes it affordable for a wide audience, it has the “Nexus” allure, and it’s the type of thing early adopters dream about. Even limiting the Nexus Player to 2 per customer, they sold out well before 24 hours.

So, as is typical with such cases, we’re now seeing the Nexus Player on eBay for $150:

Screen Shot 2014-10-18 at 8.49.04 AM

The seller of the listing above actually seems quite reputable, with a 99.8% feedback score and 168 positive reviews in the past month (2 neutral, 0 negative). Then again, he’s not the only one selling it.

My first question: who is buying it? The Nexus Player doesn’t even ship until mid November and the likelihood that Google puts it back up for sale again is very good. Why jump the gun when you’ll likely save $50 and get it sooner directly from the source? And since there is a 2 unit limit, how do these sellers have unlimited devices to sell? That seems a bit fishy.

Nevertheless, if you’re looking to buy the Nexus Player right now, you’re met with the below dreaded message. Were you able to buy the Nexus Player before it sold out? Hit up the Nexus Player Forum on AndroidForums.com!

Screen Shot 2014-10-18 at 8.47.24 AM

UPDATE: We’re now being pointed to the bottom of the Nexus Player page to a quote that says the following:

This device has not been approved by the Federal Communications Commission.

It is not for sale until approval of the FCC has been obtained.

That seems like a rather large detail to overlook before initially putting it on sale for the first time… don’t ya think? Could that mid November shipment date be in jeopardy? Or is the NexP just about to make good with FCC folk and this is a mere technicality?

The Nexus 6 price debate, Android Lollipop on other devices, and more [From the Forums]

fromtheforums

It’s all Nexus this week (and a little bit of Lollipop and Note 4) over at AndroidForums.com. It’s no surprise these devices have everyone talking, and our new forums dedicated to the Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and Nexus Player are poised to become prime resources for future owners. Here is what’s on the minds of the masses.

Who pre-ordered the Nexus 9?

nexus-9-iggy

After it was finally unveiled officially on Wednesday, the Nexus 9 went up for pre-order today and we’re itching to find out who bit the bullet. The latest Google tablet will be built by HTC and is the first to run Android Lollipop. Are you an early adopter? Head on over to our new Nexus 9 forums to join the discussion, drop some knowledge, and chat with other soon-to-be owners.

Nexus 6 a little too rich for your blood?

nexus-6-domino

Is the $649 price tag of the Nexus 6 more than you expected? Will you still be buying? What if it sells at carrier subsidy for as low as $49? The high cost of owning the Nexus 6 has been a point of complaint for many potential buyers following the handset’s official unveiling. Here’s what else everyone is talking about:

Find all that and more over at our Nexus 6 forums.

Android Lollipop on other devices

Nexus Family 6 9 Player

Maybe you count yourself among those perfectly happy with their current Android device and not at all interested in picking up the Nexus 6 or Nexus 9. This week’s announcements were still cause for excitement with the official unveiling of Android 5.0 Lollipop. But when will it come to your device? That’s what everyone from Moto X owners to Nexus 5 holdouts are wondering. What about Android 5.0 on the LG G2? Ranting about it on the forum won’t make it happen any faster, but, hey, at least it will pass some time.

Don’t forget: Galaxy Note 4 now available

note-4-android-robots-phandroid

Lost in all this Nexus madness is the fact that the Galaxy Note 4 has gone on sale today. Did you pick yours up? First you will want to read our list of things every new owner should do. Then be sure to stop by our Galaxy Note 4 forums for all the, news, tips and tricks, accessory info and more. If you remain undecided, check out our rather thorough review for the lowdown on Samsung’s latest.

And more…

Come back next week for even more gems from Android Forums. In the mean time, register for an account if you haven’t already and take a spin around the place for yourself. You’ll never know what conversation you might stumble into, and it could just wind up here in From the Forums next week.

Leaked Samsung Gear S details reveal it will have its own plan on Sprint

gear s info (1)

Whether you’re surprised that the Samsung Gear S, a standalone smart watch, would require a separate line of service depends on what you thought Samsung was promising. Trusted sources close to the matter have revealed to Phandroid that the Samsung Gear S will have a special plan on Sprint, and likely any other carrier it heads to once it launches.

As such, you’ll need a plan to tie it to and you have one of two options for achieving that:

  • a special $10 per month “connected device” plan that gives you 1,000 minutes, 1,000 messages and 100MB of data

  • a $10 add-on to a Family Share Pack plan that shares data, minutes and messages with all other devices

The leaked document was also careful to note that the Gear S won’t pull from its own allotment of text, minutes and data while in Bluetooth mode and paired with a smartphone as everything would be going through the smartphone’s line at that point. Sounds par for the course for a standalone smart watch so all we need is an actual arrival date (something we hope to hear about very soon now that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is out of the door).

Nexus 6 pops up on Google Play in 32GB and 64GB flavors starting at $649

Discuss Nexus 6 at AndroidForums.com!

nexus 6 google play

Google has just updated Google Play with some nice landing spots for the Nexus 6 phablet announced this past Wednesday. The device comes in two colors — Midnight Blue and Cloud White — and in 16GB or 32GB flavoring. As Motorola confirmed, the device begins at $649.99 for an unlocked 16GB model, and we now know that you’ll need to add $50 more if you want double the storage.

It’s worth noting that there is one SKU for the entirety of North America, so you’ll be able to order one without fear of it being incompatible with your network of choice. There will be a separate SKU for everyone not in America that should go up on those respective versions of Google Play in due time.

Of course, folks not looking to pay that $649 off-contract price can wait for pricing and availability details directly from the carriers. We know the device is headed to all 5 major US carriers this go-round, and we imagine there will be some installment payment plans and contract-based options for helping make this purchase a bit more affordable.

Google originally didn’t commit to a specific day for pre-sales and shipping of the Nexus 6 so there’s no clue when that glorious buy button will light up. The best estimate they could give us for pre-sales is late October, though, while the device is being stamped with a “November 2014″ shipping window. We’ll be sure to update you guys once pre-sales begin.

Final Android 5.0 Lollipop SDKs and APIs now available, as well as preview images for Nexus 5 and 7

Lollipop-Forrest-Cropped large

Developers, listen up: Android 5.0 Lollipop will soon be headed to handsets, and that means final APIs and SDKs are ready for you to begin developing against. You’ll use these to make sure everything’s good to go by the time the update begins hitting the first handsets (which are sure to be those from the Nexus camp).

There are over 5,000 new APIs to get your feet wet with, including libraries for material design animations and UI elements, new under-the-hood features, new user-facing features and more. You’ll be looking for API Level 21, and apps made at that level can now be uploaded to Google Play for use when Android Lollipop arrives for the masses.

Google also has tons of documents to help you get started with building Material Design user interfaces, building user interfaces for Android TV and a whole lot more. Here are a few relevant links for you to get started with:

And at the source link you’ll be able to find download links for the final preview images for both the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7, though they haven’t gone live as of the time of this writing (and note that these aren’t to be considered final images — those will be along once the final Android 5.0 upgrade begins rolling out for these devices).

Have fun and get those apps ready for the next exciting chapter of Android! As for users, be sure to get a refresher on everything new in Android 5.0 right here (and cross your fingers that it doesn’t take too long for it to make its way to your handset or tablet if you’re a non-Nexus user).

Everything you need to know about the Nexus 9

Everything you need to know about the Nexus 9

nexus-9-tabledThe newly announced Nexus 9 is available for pre-order today, but what’s the hype over the latest Google slate all about? Here’s a primer on the newest member of the Nexus family — the first Android device to launch with the Lollipop update.

Hardware & Design

Nexus-9-fanned

The Nexus 9 (designed and manufactured by HTC under the Google’s guidance) offers a compromise when it comes to size, but it doesn’t compromise when it comes to its spec sheet. An 8.9-inch display equates to a form factor with a smaller footprint than a 10-inch slate but more screen real estate than 7-inch options. This best-of-both-worlds approach should appeal to a wide range of users. A thickness of 7.9mm and weight of 425g (WiFi model) make for a light and portable device.

We mentioned that HTC and Google didn’t cut corners when it came to hardware. Here’s the spec highlights for the Nexus 9:

  • 8.9-inch IPS LCD (2048×1536, 4:3 aspect ratio)

  • NVIDIA Kegra K1 (64-bit dual-core Denver CPU @ 2.3GHz)

  • Kepler GPU

  • 2GB RAM

  • 8MP rear, 1.6MP front-facing cameras

  • 6700mAh battery

The Nexus 9 also features front-facing HTC BoomSound speakers (as well as 3.5mm headset jack), dual microphones, MIMO WiFi 802.11ac, and LTE connectivity options. Google promises battery life of up to 9.5 hours for media playback and WiFi browsing with standby times of up to 30 days.

Android 5.0 Lollipop & Timely Upgrades

Lollipop-Forrest-Cropped large

The Nexus 9 will be the first device to ship with Android 5.0 Lollipop. The operating system update is best known for its visual overhaul dubbed Material Design. Material Design aims to create a familiar but custom-tailored interface across Android devices, allowing users to seamlessly transition from their smartphone to tablet to smartwatch and even TV with the new Nexus Player. Material Design relies on responsive animations to create visual feedback to interface interactions, creating a more tangible experience that feels intuitive and natural.

Other improvements include enhanced notifications and multitasking as well as a new battery saver feature to squeeze every last minute out of a waning charge. The Nexus 9 takes advantage of Lollipop’s capability to allow access to Google Now voice commands even when the display is powered down. User’s simply speak and their tablet responds.

Under-the-hood improvements include Project Volta, again focused on improving battery life, and the transition to the new ART runtime. ART replaces the Dalvik runtime that has long been a part of Android and promises better application speeds and an overall performance boost.

Because the Nexus 9 is a Nexus device, it will not only be the first to launch with Lollipop but it will also be first in line to receive future Android updates. With a direct line to Google, updates will push to the Nexus 9 as soon as they are available. Carrier and manufacturer interference will not slow down the process. When Android 5.1 is ready, Nexus users will receive it before anyone else.

Media Machine

nexus-9-iggy

The Nexus 9’s abundant power and efficient Android 5.0 operating system make it the perfect device for reading, web browsing, streaming video, gaming, and more. Access to the Google Play Store gives puts over 1 million apps and games, a huge library of books, and nearly endless music and movies right at the users fingertips. Entertainment options on the Nexus 9 are nearly endless.

The N9’s 192-core Kepler GPU promises desktop-grade graphics and the 64-bit NVIDIA Tegra K1 is future-proofed for the next generation of mobile software. The dual BoomSound speakers provide immersive audio for movies, games, and music alike.

Keyboard Dock

nexus-9-keyboard

A separate keyboard dock will be available for the Nexus 9, doubling as a productivity tool and stand for hands free entertainment. The dock features magnetic attachment and a folding design that allows users to position their Nexus 9 at the perfect angle for work or play. The full-fledged keyboard turns the N9 into a potential replacement for a laptop when it comes to tasks like document creation, email, and more.

Configuration Options & Pricing

The Nexus 9 is available today for pre-order in a variety of configurations via Best Buy, Amazon, and the Google Play Store. Pricing starts at $399 for the WiFi-only model with 16GB of internal storage. The WiFi model with 32GB sells for $479. A WiFi + LTE version with 32GB of storage is available for $599. All options will be available in one of three colors: lunar white, indigo black, and beige.

Retail availability begins November 3rd. Pre-orders are expected to arrive on or before that date.

Twitter begins rolling out Audio cards for in-line audio playback

twitter audio cards

Twitter has started to roll out an interesting new feature for folks who hate being kicked out of the app to listen to audio. Twitter Audio Cards is the name, and should someone you follow post a link to an audio file for playback on a specific site, Twitter will allow you to open and play the file in-line without you having to exit your Twitter app.

The feature (illustrated on the iPhone version of Twitter in the photo above) has to be implemented on a site by site basis, so there are only a couple of services supported to start — SoundCloud and iTunes. Twitter is obviously working on adding more for folks who don’t fancy those services so we’ll have to wait a while yet for more of our favorites to pop up.

Of course, you probably won’t be able to play audio that is shared from services which are only accessible with premium subscriptions, but there are a ton of free sites out there that we wouldn’t mind seeing pop up in the weeks or months to come.

New Chromecast SKU hits FCC, but your current one is not being replaced

Chromecast featured 2

You may come across news today that a new Chromecast model has found its way to the FCC, but that isn’t cause to put yours up on Craigslist or eBay in preparation for a new one. A Googler was questioned about the device’s appearance at the FCC in a recent Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, and he suggests this new model won’t be anything to sing to high heaven about:

We’re always working to update Chromecast with the the latest software and hardware components, but we don’t have any new user-facing features planned for this device.

He continues:

No plans for big announcement on this one. Mostly because it will have the same features as the original and most users won’t notice a difference. Sorry–I can’t say more about this topic.

So there’s that. He says “most” users won’t notice a difference, though we’re not exactly sure what he considers “most” to be, nor does he go into any detail about what the difference might bring. Smoother performance might sit atop the list for anyone who thinks the current model is a bit too slow, but I’m sure that’s something we’d all notice if we were using them side-by-side.

There really shouldn’t be anything to worry about, though. Set-top boxes, consoles and the like have long been updated with more efficient internals without most users noticing the difference. The original Xbox 360 comes to mind, with the jumps to Jasper and Falcon chipsets that offered the same processing and graphics performance, but cut down on excessive heat and lowered the failure rate.

For Chromecast, this could just be a case of Google using better internals, more affordable internals or simply rewiring a couple of things to ensure long-term use without issues. All of that is to say if you were planning to get a Chromecast then there probably is no use in waiting to pull the trigger.

Pre-order the Nexus 9 early from Amazon for $399, ships Nov 3rd

Amazon HTC Nexus 9 preorder

It’s a little bit early from Google’s announced October 17th pre-order date, but starting right now you can pre-order the HTC-made Nexus 9 from Amazon for $400 (16GB) or $480 (32GB). Left out was the LTE model and specific color options, but then again, Amazon did jump the gun.

Ship dates are currently set for November 3rd, same as anywhere else so pre-ordering now doesn’t necessarily guarantee you’ll receive the tablet early — it just gives you a little peace of mind. Tomorrow, the Nexus 9 will be available on the Google Play Store if you want to wait a few more hours.

For anyone wary, Amazon has some of the best customer service this side of the internet and could help avoid any frustrations that may arise should the Google Play Store sell out quickly. Links provided below.

Despite $16.5 billion in revenue, Google misses Q3 estimates

Despite $16.5 billion in revenue, Google misses Q3 estimates

It was time for another one of Google’s investor calls this afternoon, with Google’s CFO Patrick Pichette leading the call to talk about the company’s Q3 2014 earnings.

Despite Google tipping the scales at $16.5 billion for the quarter — a 20% growth year-over-year — it seems the internet search giant may have fallen just a little bit short of initial estimates with profit at $6.35 a share, versus a $6.53 projection.

This was due in part to slower growth of Google’s advertising business which was up 17%, but a slowdown from Q2. Google’s websites were also up 20%, but coming in less than the prior quarter’s 23%. Google’s operating expenses accounted for 37% of their revenue (up from 33% the previous year). Looking ahead, Google is working on ads that resize themselves to accommodate the growing number of smaller displays (smartphones) accounting for web traffic. For those interested, you can find more detailed numbers over on Google’ official Investor Relations page linked below.

Here’s a few Nexus 6 camera samples, size comparison against iPhone 6 Plus too

Nexus 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus

With Google surprising just about everyone and making an aggressive play to offer up the Nexus 6 across the 4 major carriers in the US, you would assume the phone is being actively tested on those networks. And you’d be right. Taking to his Google+ page, T-Mobile employee Duan Dao decided to post a few images of his test unit, not too unlike the one we saw T-Mobile Product Manager Des Smith unbox yesterday.

Because he’s a good sport, Dao was nice enough to go the extra mile and show the world how the phone compares in size to the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and last year’s Motorola Moto X. The best part was he even posted a few sample images showing off the phone’s photo taking abilities — something we haven’t seen given Google didn’t have time to send out actual review units for anyone to play around with (yet).

Unfortunately, these weren’t posted at anywhere near full res, so you wont be able to blow these up and thoroughly examine every pixel (we also blurred out a minor which appeared in one of the pics). Although the phone is still in testing and the software on the test units more than likely isn’t final, this is just a sample of what you may expect when the phone launches next month. What do you think?
